International best-sellers (i.e. mostly British and American books) are selling briskly in China these days. David Beckham’s autobiography, the Harry Potter books, the Who Moved My Cheese series, etc. all sold in the (hundreds of) thousands. But the downside of these sales is a growing neglect of local authors. The trend is also somewhat harmful to copyright owners: publishers try to cut corners by hiring college students to translate foreign bestsellers, leading to egregious errors.
The California Supreme Court is reviewing the case of a Santa Teresa High School student who was expelled in 2001 and has already spent 90 days in juvenile hall for writing poetry that included the line “For I can be the next kid to bring guns to kill students at school.” Now J.M. Coetzee and Michael Chabon are among signatories of a brief urging the court to overturn the conviction.
