Happy Birthday, MLK

mlk.jpgToday marks the official celebration of Martin Luther King’s birthday, who would have been seventy-seven on Sunday. Like many others, I can’t think of MLK without thinking also of his “I Have A Dream” speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1963. I am always moved by that speech–and also sobered by it, because although there’s there’s been unquestionable progress in the last forty years, there’s still much, much to do before the dream of racial equality can be a reality.

If you have Real Audio, you can listen to the speech at the History and Politics Out Loud site. Or you can read it here.
