Not Up To You

So the California legislature passed a bill to allow gay marriage on Tuesday, but Schwarzenegger plans to veto it. Says his spokeswoman:

Out of respect for the will of the people, the governor will veto AB 849.

Respect is great, really, except that, if black people in the South had had to wait on a popular vote in order to get their civil rights, they’d still be drinking from separate water fountains. In a democracy, civil rights are inalienable. They’re not something a bunch of us get to decide on for others.
