It’s Not Over

When I visited Morocco last summer, I shared my despair about another Bush presidency with my friend Karim. His response was, “American democracy has been on auto-pilot for too long. It’ll take things getting much worse before they can get better.” The notion seemed untenable at the time, but now I hang on to those words as a way of keeping faith. We will get through another four years, if we have to, just as we’ve gone through the first four. There are discussions to be had, protests to attend, art to be created, but most of all, a whole lot of self-evaluation to do. In the end, things will get better. And if they don’t, well, there’s always this.
