GC: But why do you think the publishing industry has gotten so worked up about this year’s nominees? So many pieces in the media seem kind of angry.
SSB: I can’t believe the New York Times, in particular! Miller’s was the fourth piece, and Edward Wyatt wrote two. And even in that very first article [by Wyatt], the angle was already beginning to take shape — of “Who the fuck are these women?” And there were already quotes saying, “I’ve never heard of any of these books.” And so even from that initial “reporting” of the award’s finalists, that particular hook was already … [begins laughing]
