The latest issue of the Atlantic Monthly came in the mail on Saturday, and I was horrified by one bit of statistics in their facts section.

The number of people who claim to do ‘creative writing’ has risen from around 11 million to nearly 15 million since 1982, meaning that a full seven percent of the adult population is currently churning out writing for an ever diminishing pool of readers.

Meanwhile, according to the NEA, reading is in decline. That can only mean one thing: All these new authors don’t read (or don’t read enough, anyway.)
