Francisco Goldman talks about his new novel, The Divine Husband, with Regis Behe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
“I am astounded that [Cuban poet Jose Marti] of such extreme literary importance is so unknown,” Goldman says during a phone interview. “He was, in the late 19th century when he lived in New York City — after Walt Whitman leaves and moves to New Jersey — … the greatest writer living in New York City. Goldman believes Marti’s literary life has been eclipsed by his iconic status as a political revolutionary killed in 1895 during the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain.
In Goldman’s new book, Jose Marti features prominently. Goldman describes his characters as “the sun all these planets orbit around.”
