I Was With Her Until She Said She Didn’t Read Translations

Last week, Maud linked to Lorrie Moore’s classic “How to become a writer” from her first collection Self-Help. This weekend, Nathalie reports on a Q&A with Moore at the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop.

[Lorrie] Moore describes the process of writing a short story: First comes “some idea”; then, “things fall in from the world” — things that have “correspondence” to that first idea; and eventually, there’s a moment when the story “closes” shut and becomes a “hot house of a fictional world.”
