A great Arab American, the poet Khalil Gibran, once wrote “Ask not what your country can do for you; Ask what you can do for your country”. Four decades after President Kennedy spoke those words, they are still a reminder that ordinary citizens still have a lot to do for the nation.

Since we’re awash in Islamophobia at the moment, here is one thing I can do. I can quote some verses from the Qur’an that you don’t hear about on Fox News. And you can judge for yourself.

On violence:
[4:93] And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his punishment is hell; he shall abide in it, and God will send His wrath on him and curse him and prepare for him a painful chastisement.
[6:151] Do not kill the soul which God has forbidden except for the requirements of justice; this He has enjoined you with that you may understand.
[17:33] And do not kill any one whom God has forbidden, except for a just cause, and whoever is slain unjustly, We have indeed given to his heir authority, so let him not exceed the just limits in slaying; surely he is aided.

On Jews and Christians:
[2.62] Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in God and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.

On war and self-defence:
[4.94] O you who believe! when you go to war in God’s way, make investigation, and do not say to any one who offers you peace: You are not a believer. Do you seek goods of this world’s life! But with God there are abundant gains; you too were such before, then God conferred a benefit on you; therefore make investigation; surely God is aware of what you do.
[22.39] Permission (to fight) is given to those upon whom war is made because they are oppressed, and most surely God is well able to assist them.

On cultural literacy
[49.13] O you men! surely We have created you of a male and a female, and made you tribes and families that you may know each other; surely the most honorable of you with God is the one among you most careful (of his duty); surely God is Knowing, Aware.

On Men and Women

[33.35] Surely the men who submit and the women who submit, and the believing men and the believing women, and the obeying men and the obeying women, and the truthful men and the truthful women, and the patient men and the patient women and the humble men and the humble women, and the almsgiving men and the almsgiving women, and the fasting men and the fasting women, and the chaste men and the chaste women, and the men who remember God much and the women who remember — God has prepared for them forgiveness and a mighty reward.
