Yesterday, I hosted a bridal shower for a good friend. There were food and libations, poems and good wishes, rose petals and votive candles. There was a henna tattoo artist, and I had her do a dragonfly on my back and an arabesque-like design on my arm. We were all enjoying the thought of someone making the leap into married life, and the fact that none of us mentioned the horror of last month’s tragedy. Life seemed to have gone back to a semblance of normalcy.

Then today I woke up again to the sound of the phone ringing (what a dreadful toll). Bombs have been dropped on Kabul and on “Al Qaeda facilities.” I contemplated spending the day watching CNN, but opted instead to read, and to do some writing.
