I neglected to put a “Gone Fishing” sign in this space before I departed on holiday, so over the last few weeks, I received a fair number of email messages from readers asking if anything was wrong. Nothing was–I just needed to disconnect for a bit while traveling up to northern California and Oregon. My husband and I had planned a few days in Big Sur, but the national park was closed because of the fires that had ravaged the area in early July. (We spent our time eating at seaside restaurants instead.) Then we went on to Crater Lake, which was pretty incredible. There was still a little bit of snow on the ground at higher altitudes, and the lake itself was of the deepest blue you could imagine. We went to Portland afterward, to visit my sister. She took a week off from work, and we all hiked, swam, went to the movies, and did a whole lot more eating.
