Anita Shreve talks about selling four million copies of The Pilot’s Wife and another few million of her earlier novels, moving her from the midlist to the bestseller list.

“But there was a backlash. I had a very modest but solid literary reputation. Once you go into the bestseller lists, you become something else and it is harder to hang on to that literary reputation.”

You know what happens when people hit it big and start complaining about fame? No one listens.
