let the bush legacy begin

Thursday, November 7th, 2002

What a nightmare :
“The White House would not wait for the new Congress to convene in January to begin its legislative drive, [White House spokesperson Ari Fleischer said], it would begin sending previously blocked measures back to the Senate this month. (…) The White House’s immediate to-do list is headed by the establishment of a new homeland security department, described yesterday by Mr Fleischer as a “vital priority”. It includes the effective privatisation of state pensions by investing social security funds in the stock market, the promotion of “faith-based” charity for the poor in place of government social welfare programmes, and the reintroduction of energy legislation incorporating plans to drill for oil in the Alaskan Arctic national wildlife refuge. ”

what were they thinking?

I’m depressed about this. It’s not that I’m so enamored with the Democrats (they’re just as sold to cold, hard cash as the other guys) but with the loss of the Senate things aren’t going to get better in terms of handling corporate malfeasance, the environment, the war on Iraq, or the Middle East mess. Alex, ever the optimist, says that this loss will force the democrats to recraft their message.
I don’t know.
Here in California, Gray Davis won, unsurprisingly. Measure B, which is designed to save the few trauma centers we have left, looks like it passed, and Prop 50, which would protect the water also passed. The rest is business as usual, with democrats sweeping all the major positions. Yawn.

Just because you’re a Booker-nominated (thrice) best-selling author and the toast of Oprah’s Book Club doesn’t mean you won’t be profiled at airports in this country.

decadence in marrakesh

Why would Jamel Debbouze pay for P. Diddy’s Marrakesh party? I’m having a hard time imagining the two of them in a room and what they’d talk about.

not ready for 21st century voting

Monday, November 4th, 2002

A few days ago at the library I saw that a notice that claimed that residents in our city could vote all week before the election, that they would be open on Sunday, and that the voting could be done on these cool-looking electronic systems. So on Sunday Alex and I pored over our ballots, did research on a bunch of sites, and once we had made up our minds on all the candidates, headed over to the library only to find … the building was closed. We met with other would-be voters and tried to gain access, unsuccessfully. I guess we’ll just have to do it tomorrow. Darn.
